Este é um projeto que começou por ser de interpretação da peça de Čapek e se transformou numa exposição e Livro de Artista. Nesta monstra estiveram os originais das ilustrações do Livro de Artista que fiz a partir da peça 'R.U.R. (Rossum Universal Robots)' do autor checo Karel Čapek. Concebi este trabalho como um tributo a 3 efemérides que se assinalaram neste ano: o 135° o aniversário do nascimento do autor, 105 anos da data em que ele escreveu a peça e 80 anos desde o fim da segunda guerra mundial. Cada livro traz um desenho único (20 x 14 cm, numerados, assinados e datados) que 'espreita' através da capa, fazendo com que todos os exemplares sejam diferentes, tal como cada um de nos. Além do quadríptico de grande escala com os 4 momentos da peça e dos desenhos de cada um dos personagens, fiz também o desenho da capa, o design e paginação do livro e a tradução do texto original do checo para o português. Foi um trabalho de equipa que envolveu a preciosaa colaboração de vários humanos, a par de alguns 'robôs' (inteligência artificial). Em simultâneo com a exposição realizou-se uma conversa muito interessante que juntou especialistas de diferentes áreas para falarem de sobre Inteligência Artificial e fizemos, também, a apresentação pública do Livro de Artista.

A Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian adquiriu um exemplar do Livro de Artista para a sua Biblioteca de Arte, e eu doei dois exemplares à rede de Bibliotecas Públicas de Lisboa.

This is a project that began as an interpretation of Čapek's play and evolved into an exhibition and artist's book. The exhibition showcased the original illustrations for the Artist's Book I created based on the play 'R.U.R. Rossum Universal Robots' by the Czech author Karel Čapek. I conceived this work as a tribute to three anniversaries that occurred this year: the 135th anniversary of the author's birth, 105 years since he wrote the play, and 80 years since the end of the Second World War. Each book features a unique drawing (20 x 14 cm) that 'peeks out' from the cover, making each copy different, just like each of us. In addition to the large-scale quadriptych depicting the four moments of the play and the drawings of each character, I also designed the book cover, the layout and pagination, and translated the original Czech text into Portuguese. It was a team effort involving the invaluable collaboration of several humans, along with some 'robots' (artificial intelligence). 

On the last day of the exhibition, a very interesting talk took place, bringing together experts from different fields to talk about Artificial Intelligence. On that date, we also held the public presentation of the Artist's Book.

Meanwhile, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation acquired one copy of the Artist's Book for its Art Library, and I donated two copies to the Lisbon Public Library network.

2024 é o ano do centenário da morte de Franz Kafka e não há melhor forma de o assinalar do que interpretando um dos meus contos favoritos com uns desenhos inspirados por outros, riscados pelo próprio Kafka (sim, ele também desenhava), e depois inseri-los em duas publicações comemorativas: o 'Livro de Artista' e o 'Conto ilustrado'.

LIVRO DE ARTISTA - Integrado num projeto editorial lançado em 2023 pela Miguel Castro Art Advisor que conta já com 2 colaborações anteriores, este terceiro 'Livro de Artista' tem uma edição limitada a apenas 40 exemplares, incluindo uma tiragem especial de 15 unidades bilíngues, 10 das quais encomendadas  pela Embaixada da República Checa. O 'Livro de Artista' consiste numa caixa totalmente feita à mão por Henrique Lagarto (ver vídeo abaixo) onde, além do conto escrito na versão original por Franz Kafka, em alemão, e da versão traduzida para português por Isabel Franco do Carmo, se inclui uma capa desenhada pelo artista  António Faria, um texto introdutório escrito pelo Professor Miguel Meruje e um dos meus desenhos originais… que pode permanecer dentro da caixa ou se pode emoldurar como fizeram os editores da Miguel Castro Art Advisor com o desenho que escolheram (ver foto).

CONTO ILUSTRADO - Acontece que para interpretar 'Um artista da fome' eu me diverti tanto a fazer os desenhos que acabei por ter 64 e não apenas os 40 que seriam necessários para incluir no 'Livro de Artista'. Pensei também que, quem ficasse com um dos 40 exemplares do 'Livro de Artista' ficaria com um dos desenhos originais mas não teria a possibilidade de conhecer qual a parte do conto que o mesmo interpreta... além de que também não ia conhecer os restantes desenhos que acompanham a história. Assim, resolvi avançar, em edição própria, com o 'Conto ilustrado' onde a reprodução dos 64 desenhos acompanha a história na versão original alemã e na versão em português. Este pequeno volume de 80 páginas em formato A5 foi produzido com o mesmo papel Munken Pure e com o mesmo tipo de letra que o 'Livro de Artista,' de forma a que possa complementá-lo ou ser adquirido isoladamente.

OS DESENHOS - Os originais foram desenhados ‘alla prima’ a pincel e aparo com tinta-da-china sobre papel 300 g/m2 em formato A5, estão todos numerados, assinados e datados.

2024 marks the centenary of Franz Kafka's death, and there's no better way to commemorate it than by interpreting one of my favorite short stories with drawings inspired by others, sketched by Kafka himself (yes, he also drew), and then inserting them into two commemorative publications: the 'Artist's Book' and the 'Illustrated Story'.

ARTIST'S BOOK - Integrated into an editorial project launched in 2023 by Miguel Castro Art Advisor, which already includes 2 previous collaborations, this third 'Artist's Book' has a limited edition of only 40 copies, including a special edition of 15 bilingual units, 10 of which were commissioned by the Embassy of the Czech Republic. The 'Artist's Book' consists of a box entirely handmade by Henrique Lagarto (see video below) where, in addition to the story written in the original version by Franz Kafka, in German, and the version translated into Portuguese by Isabel Franco do Carmo, there is a cover designed by the artist António Faria, an introductory text written by Professor Miguel Meruje and one of my original drawings… which can remain inside the box or can be framed as the editors of Miguel Castro Art Advisor did with the drawing they chose (see photo).

ILLUSTRATED STORY - It turns out that while interpreting 'A Hunger Artist,' I had so much fun making the drawings that I ended up with 64, not just the 40 that would be needed to include in the 'Artist's Book.' I also thought that whoever got one of the 40 copies of the 'Artist's Book' would have one of the original drawings but wouldn't have the opportunity to know which part of the story it interprets... and they wouldn't know the other drawings that accompany the story either. So, I decided to proceed, in my own edition, with the 'Illustrated Story,' where reproductions of the 64 drawings accompany the story in the original German version and in the Portuguese version. This small 80-page volume in A5 format was produced with the same Munken Pure paper and the same typeface as the 'Artist's Book,' so that it can complement it or be purchased separately.

THE DRAWINGS - The originals were drawn ‘alla prima’ with brush and nib using India ink on 300 g/m2 paper in A5 format; they are all numbered, signed, and dated.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation acquired one copy of the Artist's Book for its Art Library, and I donated 2 two copies of 'Illustrated Story' book to Lisbon's Public Libraries.
